Information About Huancayo Perú

Huancayo is located in the central Andean mountains at an altitude of 3270 meters (aprox. 11,000 ft) above sea level.  It has a population of approximately 450,000 people. Temperatures range from 5°C to 25°C (40°F - 77°F) with warm sunny days and chilly nights.

  • Please consider making Huancayo Peru part of your Peru travel experience. Huancayo is an excellent base for exploring the Mantaro Valley, named after “Río Mantaro", that flows through it. Here you can experience the distinct culture of the Huancas, represented in colorful costumes, passionate dances and high quality artisan craftsmanship.

  •  Huancayo is about 312 km from Lima and the journey takes about 6 hours by bus.

  • The Sunday Fair in Huancayo is a real sight.  It is one of the most popular and famous fairs in Peru. Artisans from surrounding villages gather to sell expertly crafted and engraved pumpkin pots, silver works, textile handicrafts, beautiful wall hangings and leather products.

  • Huancayo also provides an excellent “base camp” to explore Mount Huaytapallana.

  • The Valle del Mantaro is one of the richest agricultural and cultural regions in the Andes; each village having a distinct style of dress, music and dance.
