Huancayo is
located in the central Andean mountains at an altitude of 3270
meters (aprox. 11,000 ft) above sea level. It has a population of
approximately 450,000 people. Temperatures range from 5°C to 25°C
(40°F - 77°F) with warm sunny days and chilly nights. |

The Sunday Fair in Huancayo is
a real sight. It is one of the most popular and famous fairs in Peru. Artisans from surrounding villages gather to
sell expertly crafted and engraved pumpkin pots, silver works, textile handicrafts,
beautiful wall hangings and leather products.

Huancayo also provides an excellent
“base camp” to explore Mount Huaytapallana.

The Valle del Mantaro is one
of the richest agricultural and cultural regions in the Andes; each
village having a distinct style of dress, music and dance.

The Cordillera Huaytapallana, a
glaciated mountain range, part of the "Cordillera Central", is 17 km
long and faces a northwesterly direction. It has 5 peaks, all over
5000 metres above sea level. The highest peak is the Nevado Lasuntay at
5,720 m asl. The Cordillera Huaytapallana drains its water into the
Atlantic Ocean via the Río Mantaro.
